Accuracy in Measuring Distance of Moving Objects Using Laser Ranging Sensors-Laser Ranging Total Solution - ERDI

Industries nowadays rely heavily on sensors. But where they are used? Have you used lifts? Have you seen automatic doors? Have you seen any of the automatic machines used at home or at industrial facilities? All these machines rely on sensors.

In any sector where automation and precision are essential, lasers find a prominent spot. Laser ranging sensors, often referred to as LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) or laser distance sensors are used for measuring distance. Or, they are also used to sense the presence of an object in proximity. These devices use laser beams to determine the distance to an object with incredible accuracy, even when that object is in motion. From intelligent manufacturing to autonomous systems, the ability to measure moving targets in real time has transformed industrial operations.

Laser ranging sensors for measuring distance with high accuracy

The sensors measure distance using either Time-of-Flight (ToF) method (a laser pulse is emitted, bounces off a target, and returns to the sensor.) or phase-shift method (continuous laser beam is modulated and projected toward the object, and the sensor measures the phase difference between the emitted and received signal).

For short-range precision, triangulation method is also used. In this method, a laser projects a spot onto a target, which is viewed by a camera or sensor array. Small changes in angle determine distance.

This is the method used for effectively measuring moving objects.

Accurate measurements for moving objects

Measuring moving objects is sophisticated. Today’s laser ranging sensors maintain exceptional accuracy with the use of advanced laser sensors. These sensors take thousands of readings per second, offering reliable tracking of moving objects.

Additionally, laser ranging sensors also provide real-time signal processing through embedded algorithmsthat also correct for motion blur, environmental noise, angle of incidence, and reflectivity of the target. This means, objects that are speeding, rotating, or oscillating can be tracked accurately.

ERDI Tech Ltd. excels in laser sensors, and a variety of laser products.
