Laser Module Usage Precautions

(Important – Buyers Must Read Before Use)

Operating laser modules involves potential optical and thermal hazards. To ensure safe and proper use, please read the following precautions carefully before powering on your laser product.

  • General Safety Warnings

    • Invisible Radiation Warning– Some laser modules emit infrared (IR) or ultraviolet (UV) radiation that is invisible to the human eye. Never assume the laser is malfunctioning simply because you cannot see the beam. Always confirm that the power is disconnected before inspecting the module.
    • Do Not Look Directly into the Laser Aperture– Even when wearing certified laser safety goggles, never stare directly into or near the beam exit of a working laser module.
    • Avoid Reflected Beams from High-Power Lasers– Reflection from Class IV lasers (output power > 500 mW) can cause severe and permanent eye damage. Always wear wavelength-specific safety goggles when operating or aligning high-power laser systems.
    • Keep Away from Flammable Materials– Do not place flammable or explosive items (such as paper, cloth, leather, or plastics) in the laser path. Black or dark-colored materials absorb laser energy more easily and may ignite. (Exception: controlled material-burning experiments with proper fire protection.)
    • Avoid Direct Human Exposure– Class IIIa or higher lasers (≥ 5 mW) can burn skin or eyes. Never point a laser beam at any part of a person’s body.
    • Restrict Access to Trained Personnel Only – Keep all laser devices out of reach of untrained individuals, children, and pets.
  • Optical Path and Reflection Safety

    • Never Aim Toward Glass Surfaces– Ordinary glass reflects roughly 4 % of incident light, which can redirect dangerous laser radiation into your eyes. Avoid operating lasers in front of mirrors or reflective windows.
    • Working Plane Awareness– When setting up an experimental platform, note the laser emission height. Do not position your head or eyes near this level during operation. Lenses and mirrors may reflect or refract light unexpectedly. Always align optical components downward or horizontally—never angle a beam upward.
    • Remove Reflective Accessories– Watches, jewelry, and other shiny objects can reflect laser light unpredictably. Remove them before use.
    • Infrared Beam Detection– IR lasers (wavelength > 800 nm) are almost completely invisible. Use a beam-viewing card, IR detector, or up-conversion screen to visualize the beam path safely.
    • Visual Brightness Misjudgment– Some wavelengths (below 430 nm or above 700 nm) appear much dimmer than their actual power output. Do not rely on visual brightness to judge beam intensity.
    • Pulsed Laser Caution– Pulsed lasers can have extremely high peak power even at modest average power levels. Verify that all optical elements and samples in your experiment exceed the laser’s damage threshold before exposure.
    • Prohibited Uses– It is strictly forbidden to point laser beams at moving vehicles, aircraft, or any area where light could distract or endanger others.
    • End-of-Beam Safety Stop– Always place a black anodized or matte metal plate at the end of your optical path to absorb residual energy and prevent laser leakage into surrounding areas.

Low-Power Modules – ERDI laser modules rated below 1 mW are considered eye-safe under normal operating conditions and can be used without hazard when handled properly.

  • Recommended Protective Measures

    • Protective Eyewear– Always wear certified laser safety goggles designed for the specific wavelength and power level of your module.
    • Appropriate Clothing– Light-colored or white long-sleeved clothing reduces the risk of heat absorption or ignition if stray laser light contacts the fabric.
    • UV Laser Protection– For ultraviolet lasers, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to exposed skin areas to minimize UV radiation effects.
    • Environmental Safety– Operate lasers in a controlled laboratory or industrial environment with minimal reflective surfaces. Ensure that all personnel nearby are informed of ongoing laser use and have received proper training.

1. External circuit enable

Enable this module to work normally.

2. External circuit disable

Turn off the external circuit to save power consumption.

3. Single measurement

Trigger a single target distance measurement. For low - reflectivity targets, it will automatically repeat the measurement until stable distance data is obtained. Then, it will report the data in serial port form according to the standard data format.

4. Multiple measurements

In the continuous multiple - measurement mode, it will trigger the laser module to continuously measure the distance of the object. The typical value of the refresh rate is set to 2HZ or 5Hz, and the maximum refresh rate can reach 30Hz (customization required). This refresh rate can be adjusted through the serial port.

5. Angle measurement

If the customer has the need for angle measurement, it can be customized. The pitch angle of the target is measured, and the detectable angle range is -70° to +70°, with an angle accuracy of ±0.3°. Internal angle information (X/Y/Z coordinates) can be provided for the customer's own development.

LR1000B23

Product Description

The LR1000B23 is a compact 905nm laser rangefinder module built for OEM integration into night vision devices, thermal imagers, telescopes, laser illuminators and other handheld optical systems. Unlike long-range 1535nm military modules, this product is positioned as a light, low-power and cost-efficient 905nm ranging core for civilian and professional electro-optical equipment where space, weight and simple serial integration matter most.

The module operates at a central wavelength of 905nm ±5nm with a laser divergence angle below 6mrad, PMMA optical material, and a 20mm receiving aperture. Its specified measuring range is 4m to 1000m, with a maximum reach up to 1200m under favourable target and visibility conditions. The official ranging accuracy is δ ≤ ±1m over the main working range, with a typical resolution of 10cm, accuracy rate ≥98% and false alarm rate ≤1%. These figures make it suitable for handheld distance observation, target confirmation and auxiliary ranging in field optics.

The LRF1000B23 supports single measurement, multiple measurements and optional angle measurement. In multiple-measurement mode, the ranging refresh rate is typically 2Hz or 5Hz, with a standard configurable range of 2–10Hz, and the documentation notes that higher refresh rates such as 30Hz can be customised. For customers needing attitude or angular information, an angle-sensing version can be provided with a detectable pitch range of −70° to +70° and ±0.3° angle accuracy, together with internal X/Y/Z coordinate data for secondary development.

Electrically, the module uses a UART-TTL communication interface at a default baud rate of 115200bps, with support for multiple alternative baud rates from 9600bps up to 230400bps. It operates from a 3.3V–5V supply, with ERDI recommending ≥3.5V for stable performance. Maximum power consumption during continuous ranging is <0.8W, average power is about 0.6W, and the typical instantaneous start current is about 300mA at 3.3V, which is well suited to portable battery-powered optics and low-power

The control interface is straightforward. A dedicated SW-SHOT active-high enable pin works as the function trigger, and the UART protocol uses a standard 8-byte frame with headers 0x55 0xAA, a function code, four data bytes and checksum. The command set includes single-shot ranging, continuous ranging, stop ranging, optional angle measurement, power-on self-test, baud-rate configuration and LD constant-on mode for development. Returned distance data is encoded as the actual value ×10, so the host can reconstruct distance with one decimal place.

LR1000B23 Specification Sheet EN

Mechanically, the module is very compact at φ23mm × 45.6mm and weighs about 20g, making it easy to install inside monoculars, binoculars, thermal imagers or small observation systems. The operating temperature range is −20°C to +55°C, while a custom version can extend down to −40°C. Storage range is −40°C to +60°C. The unit is rated for 1000g/ms shock and 5–50–5 Hz, 2.5g vibration, with MTBF ≥1500h, which supports portable outdoor use and moderate recoil or vibration environments.

LR1000B23 Specification Sheet EN

For optical integration, ERDI recommends H-K9L optical glass or fused silica for the front window, with wedge angle tolerance ≤3′, surface roughness around Ra 0.012, and an AR coating for 855–955nm with transmittance ≥99.5%. The final coated window should still maintain ≥98% transmittance, and the installation geometry should keep the air gap to the rangefinder below 0.5mm. These details matter because window absorption, reflectivity and alignment directly affect final ranging distance and response

The manual also gives practical field guidance: reflectivity, target size, incidence angle and weather all strongly affect performance. Medium-reflectivity targets such as building walls represent the reference condition; highly reflective targets can exceed the nominal range, while low-reflectivity targets such as trees or animals may reduce it significantly. Rain, fog, snow, haze and strong direct sunlight will shorten usable range, and long-distance testing is best done with the module fixed on a tripod to reduce vibration.

From an application standpoint, a 905nm rangefinder of this class is especially useful where near-infrared ranging needs to be integrated with optical viewing systems. Patents and optic-system disclosures around 905nm rangefinding repeatedly show its use in viewing optics, targeting optics and compact electro-optical assemblies, which aligns well with LR1000B23’s intended roles in night vision, thermal imaging and compact field instruments.

Overall, the LR1000B23 is a practical 905nm compact laser rangefinder module for engineers who need 4–1000m ranging, ±1m accuracy, UART-TTL communication, low power and small size in one ready-to-integrate package. It is especially well suited for night vision devices, thermal imagers, telescopes, police optics, smart water conservancy, border observation and outdoor sport measurement products.
