Laser Module Usage Precautions

(Important – Buyers Must Read Before Use)

Operating laser modules involves potential optical and thermal hazards. To ensure safe and proper use, please read the following precautions carefully before powering on your laser product.

  • General Safety Warnings

    • Invisible Radiation Warning– Some laser modules emit infrared (IR) or ultraviolet (UV) radiation that is invisible to the human eye. Never assume the laser is malfunctioning simply because you cannot see the beam. Always confirm that the power is disconnected before inspecting the module.
    • Do Not Look Directly into the Laser Aperture– Even when wearing certified laser safety goggles, never stare directly into or near the beam exit of a working laser module.
    • Avoid Reflected Beams from High-Power Lasers– Reflection from Class IV lasers (output power > 500 mW) can cause severe and permanent eye damage. Always wear wavelength-specific safety goggles when operating or aligning high-power laser systems.
    • Keep Away from Flammable Materials– Do not place flammable or explosive items (such as paper, cloth, leather, or plastics) in the laser path. Black or dark-colored materials absorb laser energy more easily and may ignite. (Exception: controlled material-burning experiments with proper fire protection.)
    • Avoid Direct Human Exposure– Class IIIa or higher lasers (≥ 5 mW) can burn skin or eyes. Never point a laser beam at any part of a person’s body.
    • Restrict Access to Trained Personnel Only – Keep all laser devices out of reach of untrained individuals, children, and pets.
  • Optical Path and Reflection Safety

    • Never Aim Toward Glass Surfaces– Ordinary glass reflects roughly 4 % of incident light, which can redirect dangerous laser radiation into your eyes. Avoid operating lasers in front of mirrors or reflective windows.
    • Working Plane Awareness– When setting up an experimental platform, note the laser emission height. Do not position your head or eyes near this level during operation. Lenses and mirrors may reflect or refract light unexpectedly. Always align optical components downward or horizontally—never angle a beam upward.
    • Remove Reflective Accessories– Watches, jewelry, and other shiny objects can reflect laser light unpredictably. Remove them before use.
    • Infrared Beam Detection– IR lasers (wavelength > 800 nm) are almost completely invisible. Use a beam-viewing card, IR detector, or up-conversion screen to visualize the beam path safely.
    • Visual Brightness Misjudgment– Some wavelengths (below 430 nm or above 700 nm) appear much dimmer than their actual power output. Do not rely on visual brightness to judge beam intensity.
    • Pulsed Laser Caution– Pulsed lasers can have extremely high peak power even at modest average power levels. Verify that all optical elements and samples in your experiment exceed the laser’s damage threshold before exposure.
    • Prohibited Uses– It is strictly forbidden to point laser beams at moving vehicles, aircraft, or any area where light could distract or endanger others.
    • End-of-Beam Safety Stop– Always place a black anodized or matte metal plate at the end of your optical path to absorb residual energy and prevent laser leakage into surrounding areas.

Low-Power Modules – ERDI laser modules rated below 1 mW are considered eye-safe under normal operating conditions and can be used without hazard when handled properly.

  • Recommended Protective Measures

    • Protective Eyewear– Always wear certified laser safety goggles designed for the specific wavelength and power level of your module.
    • Appropriate Clothing– Light-colored or white long-sleeved clothing reduces the risk of heat absorption or ignition if stray laser light contacts the fabric.
    • UV Laser Protection– For ultraviolet lasers, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to exposed skin areas to minimize UV radiation effects.
    • Environmental Safety– Operate lasers in a controlled laboratory or industrial environment with minimal reflective surfaces. Ensure that all personnel nearby are informed of ongoing laser use and have received proper training.

Product Description

LRF2000A 905nm Eye-Safe 2000m Laser Rangefinder Module for Surveying, Industrial Automation and Robotics

The LRF2000A is a 905nm Class 1 eye-safe laser rangefinder module that uses time-of-flight (TOF) technology to calculate distance from the round-trip travel time of laser pulses. With a measuring range of 5–2000 m and an integrated UART (TTL_3.3V) interface, it is designed as an OEM ranging core for surveying instruments, autonomous platforms, industrial automation nodes, traffic-monitoring devices and outdoor measurement systems that need reliable 2 km performance in a very compact package.

Operating at a wavelength of 905±10 nm, the LRF2000A is classified as Class 1 under IEC 60825-1 eye-safety standards. The typical laser divergence is 3×6 mrad, with a receiver field of view of about 8 mrad, providing a practical spot size and capture field for building-type and infrastructure targets. Under visibility ≥6 km and 70% reflectivity building targets, the maximum range reaches ≥2000 m, while the minimum range is 5 m. Ranging accuracy is ±0.7 m for distances ≤200 m, and ±(0.7+0.0004·d) m for d>200 m (d in meters), with an accuracy rate of ≥98% and a false alarm rate of ≤1%, giving system designers clear quantitative data for error budgets in long-corridor and large-area measurements.

The LRF2000A supports a measurement frequency from 1 to 3 Hz, making it well suited for slowly varying or scanned scenes such as pipeline and corridor inspection, topographic surveying, smart traffic posts and fixed industrial gauges. TOF single-ranging and continuous-ranging modes allow the host to request a single reading when needed or to stream distance data at up to 3 Hz for tracking and monitoring applications.

Electrically, the module is powered from DC 3.3±0.1 V. Standby power consumption is ≤0.5 mW when powered on with the enable pin pulled low, and ≤0.35 W when the enable pin is high but no ranging is in progress. Operating power is ≤1.5 W @25°C, ≤1.75 W @70°C and ≤1.38 W @−20°C, and the startup time is ≤550 ms, so systems can wake the module only when necessary and still respond quickly. This combination of 2 km range and low power makes the LRF2000A attractive for battery-powered surveying instruments, mobile robots and distributed industrial sensors.

The electrical interface is a UART (TTL_3.3V) serial port using connector model HC-0.8-6PWT. The pins provide GND, 3.3 V supply, TTL_TXD, TTL_RXD and an enable pin that pulls low to power on the module. The factory baud rate is 115200 bps, and other baud rates from 9600 to 230400 bps can be configured via simple commands. Communication uses an 8-byte frame with headers 0x55 0xAA, a function word, four data bytes and a checksum equal to the low eight bits of the sum of the function and data bytes. Single-ranging (0x88), continuous-ranging (0x89) and stop-ranging (0x8E) commands share this structure, and results are returned as high and low bytes representing the distance multiplied by 10, for 0.1 m resolution.

The module also supports angle measurement (0x8A) when used inside a device that carries an angle sensor, returning angle data in the same scaled-hex format. Power-on self-test information (0x80) reports a status (STA) bit and error codes (ErrCode) that distinguish no-echo, out-of-range and hardware faults. External-circuit enable and disable commands (0x70 / 0x71) implement a secondary low-power mode in which the internal MCU remains in standby but can still respond to commands; sending a measurement command wakes the module into full operation automatically.

Mechanically, the LRF2000A uses a 26×25×14.5 mm (L×W×H) housing and weighs just 11±0.5 g, allowing the module to fit into compact instruments, mobile robots and smart traffic or security devices. It is specified to withstand 1200 g, 1 ms shock and 2.5 g vibration (5–50–5 Hz, 1 octave/min), with an MTBF of ≥1500 h. The operating temperature range is −20 to +70°C, storage temperature −25 to +75°C, and when integrated according to the recommendations, the module meets typical EMC, ESD and RoHS 2.0 requirements for industrial and outdoor equipment.

For applications that require an optical window, the documentation recommends using H-K9L optical glass with a wedge angle tolerance of ≤3′ and a surface roughness Ra ≈ 0.012. An anti-reflection coating optimized for 855–955 nm with ≥99.5% transmittance is suggested, and the total transmittance after any hydrophobic or hard coatings should be ≥98%. The effective aperture should be at least 2 mm smaller than the window’s outer diameter, and the antenna clearance at least 1.5 mm; thickness is typically in the 2–4 mm range, with the emission axis parallel to the window normal and the air gap kept as small as possible to reduce absorption and back-reflection.

The manual also analyses practical factors that influence ranging ability and response speed: target reflectivity, target shape, measurement angle and environment. Higher-reflectivity targets such as highway signs allow significantly longer range than low-reflectivity objects like trees or animals; water surfaces and glass are often difficult to measure. Vertical incidence on a flat surface yields better performance than oblique incidence on small or uneven targets, and adverse conditions such as fog, rain, snow and haze reduce effective range. For distant targets, a tripod is recommended to stabilise the module and improve repeatability.

With its 905nm Class 1 eye safety, 5–2000 m range, TOF principle, compact 26×25×14.5 mm and 11 g housing, 3.3 V supply, UART-TTL interface, angle-measurement support and dual low-power modes, the LRF2000A is well suited for surveying and mapping instruments, industrial automation systems, mobile robots, smart traffic and security devices, UAV payloads and other outdoor measurement tools that need a compact but genuinely 2 km-capable distance sensor.
